1898 When studying the proof Barber quarter series, by far, the best produced and attractive issues are the 1896, 1897 and 1898. A survivor of the final issue, this Superb Gem proof, is one of the finest survivors among the 735 coins originally struck and demonstrates ample confirmation of that proposition. Many of the other survivors of this delivery are also quite well preserved, suggesting that much of the mintage found its way into the hands of dealers and collectors at the time rather than the general public. Both sides are silky smooth and temptingly close to literal perfection; there are no distracting blemishes or visible hairlines what-so-ever.
